Plumbing Tips

  1. Close and drain all exterior faucets for the winter season.
  2. If you are missing the plug from your outside sewer cleanout — replace it — before vandalism occurs.
  3. Garbage disposals are for consequential food debris only, and should not be relied upon for great amounts of food waste — scrape your plates in the trash. Although a healthy disposal will grind and allow food to pass thru, the waste could easily block the kitchen drain downstream requiring it to be power snaked.
  4. Lower temperatures on gas or electric heaters will save money and be safer for your family.
  5. If you hear your drains "ticking", it might not be a leak. Pipe expansion occurs when the pipe wall is rubbing on a wood component above your ceiling. Run the associated faucet on "hot only" to see if "ticking" gets worse. The hot water magnifies the noise by "pipe expansion". If that's the case then the pipe is probably not leaking, but running in the ceiling. This is repairable.
  6. Know where all your plumbing shut off valves are located, and know how they work!
  7. If your vanity drain smells bad, try spraying a disinfectant in the overflow drain hole of the sink located near the top of the bowl.
  8. Pour about a gallon of water down "never used drains" bi-monthly to prevent sewer smells and insects.

Play It Safe

Gas

  1. Never store gasoline, propane or other flammables in your basement or any other living space of your home. Their vapors are heavier than air and can drift across to your water heater and other sources of ignition and ignite.
  2. If you smell gas in your home:
    • Do not turn on or off anything electrical.
    • All persons exit the home immediately.
    • From a cell phone or the neighbors home call 911.
    • Do not re-enter your home until ok'd by 911 personnel (gas supply to your home is off at this point).
    • Call Aquia Stafford Area Plumbing for same-day service to identify and repair gas leak.
